Adhesion and Color Fading Causes of Acrylic UV Printing and Solutions

2026-07-06

Many customers report that the patterns on acrylic printing products tend to peel off or fade with slight friction, which is mostly related to three factors: plate pretreatment, ink selection, and printing curing parameters. Combining the workshop's long-term UV printing processing experience, common causes of fading and insufficient adhesion are analyzed, and standardized solutions from the factory are provided to help customers avoid such issues during customization.

First reason: The plate surface has oil stains, release agents, or dust. Acrylic plates are coated with a protective release agent when leaving the factory, and fine dust is generated after cutting and polishing. If the plate is not cleaned before printing, the ink cannot penetrate and adhere to the surface, causing the entire pattern to peel off with slight wiping. The factory's standard processing procedure: After the plate enters the dust-free printing workshop, it is first wiped with a dedicated wiping cloth and alcohol to remove oil stains and release agents, then dried before being positioned for printing. Transparent and frosted plates are wiped separately, with special attention to cleaning dust from the grooves of frosted plates, solving the adhesion foundation issue from the source.

Second reason: Mismatched ink consumables or the use of low-quality, cheap ink. Older, low-quality UV inks have a brittle film after curing and poor compatibility with acrylic plates, easily peeling or falling off under long-term exposure to light or friction. Eco-friendly, low-odor specialized acrylic inks are adapted to acrylic material, with strong toughness and better adhesion after curing, resisting wiping and peeling. Regular processing factories use dedicated eco-friendly UV inks compatible with acrylic throughout the process, avoiding the use of general, cheap inks. Although the consumable cost is higher, it ensures stable printing firmness and avoids customer post-processing complaints about fading.

Third reason: Insufficient UV lamp curing power, and the pattern is not fully dry. Printing relies on UV light to cure the ink, but if the lamp power is too low or the printing speed is too fast, the ink surface dries while the interior remains uncured, causing the pattern to fade upon touching or wiping. Workshop standard procedure: Slow down the printing speed for transparent plates and increase the UV lamp power. Use double-sided printing with two curing steps to ensure the ink is fully dry. Regularly inspect and replace aging UV lamp tubes to avoid insufficient curing of batch products due to power degradation.

Fourth reason: Differences in plate material, with higher adhesion challenges for frosted and colored plates. Frosted acrylic surfaces are uneven, leading to uneven ink layering, which requires moderately increasing the ink volume and extending the curing time. Colored solid-color plates have thick base colors and weak bottom ink absorption, so an additional base coat is added before printing to enhance pattern adhesion.

Regular use and maintenance by the customer will also affect the service life: Avoid using alcohol or disinfectants for vigorous and repeated wiping of the printed patterns. For daily cleaning, use clean water paired with a soft cloth to gently wipe. This can significantly extend the retention time of the patterns. If the customer has a need for long-term outdoor use, the factory can additionally apply an extra layer of matte / glossy varnish coating to block sunlight and friction, further enhancing the pattern's wear resistance and UV resistance, making it less prone to fading or yellowing when used outdoors. During customization, if the product will be placed outdoors or subjected to frequent wiping, it is advisable to proactively request an additional varnish protective layer to improve the durability of the printed patterns from the processing stage, reducing post-use fading issues.
