Detailed explanation of processing techniques for acrylic sheets of different thicknesses

2026-07-06

Many customers, when customizing acrylic products, are unclear that the thickness of the plate directly affects the entire process of cutting, heat bending, polishing, and bonding. Blindly selecting thickness can easily lead to issues such as deformation, edge chipping, and bonding cracking in the finished product. Based on years of processing experience in the workshop, this details the key points of processing acrylic plates of different thicknesses from 1mm to 20mm, helping customers to select materials accurately according to the usage scenario, while also understanding the corresponding processing adjustment logic of the factory.

1-2mm ultra-thin acrylic plates are mainly used for lightweight decorative items, transparent thin signs, and layered separators. These plates are relatively soft, and the main processing challenges lie in cutting and heat bending. Laser cutting speed should not be too fast, and the power should be set low, otherwise the cut edge may melt and stick together, or the edges may chip. When heat bending, the heating time should be shortened, and the oven temperature should be controlled between 80-100°C. Prolonged high-temperature baking will directly cause bending deformation and make it impossible to set. In the bonding process, the amount of glue should be minimized. Applying glue to a large area of the plate is prone to breakage. Thin products should preferably use point bonding to reduce glue penetration that may cause the surface to turn white. Before UV printing, the plates should be placed flat to avoid irreversible creases caused by stacking and squeezing. Protective film should be applied throughout the processing to avoid minor scratches.

3-8mm standard thickness plates are the most commonly used category in the market, suitable for most display stands, signs, and storage boxes. They have a higher processing tolerance. Laser cutting parameters are standard and general, allowing for high-speed and stable cutting. The curvature of heat bending is highly flexible, and both large and small arcs can be processed. Diamond polishing results in a bright and transparent finish, with small bonding seams that are not prone to turning white. The factory's conventional processing does not require special adjustment of the process, with higher efficiency in sampling and mass production, and lower comprehensive processing costs, making them suitable for most stores' regular customization needs.

10-15mm thicker plates are used for load-bearing display stands, equipment protective covers, and thick brand signs. The plates are hard and thick. Laser cutting requires increasing the laser power and slowing down the cutting speed to ensure a complete and burr-free cut. The polishing process takes twice as long. Ordinary cloth wheel grinding cannot achieve a mirror-like, transparent finish; diamond polishing equipment must be used for multiple fine grinding processes, significantly increasing labor costs. Heat bending is extremely difficult and requires long, uniform heating to ensure consistent temperature inside and outside the plate for flat curvature. Otherwise, uneven contraction between the inside and outside of the plate may cause distortion. Most thicker irregular products will prefer to use splicing instead of integral heat bending. During bonding, the curing time of the glue is extended, and the static fixation time after bonding is doubled to prevent the splicing seams from cracking.

18-20mm ultra-thick industrial sheets are only used for special heavy-duty protection and large floor signs. There are many processing restrictions, and integral hot bending is basically impossible. All flat straight sheets are used for splicing and assembly; cutting is performed in multiple layers and stages to avoid焦边 (jiao bian - scorched edges) from single-melt cutting; polishing requires multiple processes with progressive grinding, resulting in a higher unit price. It is not recommended for applications without special load-bearing or thick texture requirements.

Core reference for customer material selection: choose 1-3mm for desktop ornaments and thin kitchen window partitions; select 5mm for conventional display stands, storage boxes, and small doorhead signs; choose 10mm or more for load-bearing display platforms and equipment protective covers. The more special the thickness, the more processing adjustments the factory needs to make, leading to increased scrap rates, and changes in delivery time and processing costs. Before customization, select an appropriate thickness based on your own usage scenario to meet product requirements while reasonably controlling customization budget and delivery cycle. The factory will adjust equipment parameters in advance based on the selected thickness to match corresponding grinding, hot bending, and bonding solutions, reducing defective products and ensuring stable finished product quality.
