What are the key points to avoid in acrylic design drawings, and which structures cannot be processed

2026-07-10

Many customers draw acrylic processing drawings themselves, as they are unfamiliar with the physical properties of the material and the processing limits of the equipment. They design unreasonable structures such as right-angle inner grooves, ultra-thin suspended walls, and narrow edge holes, leading to processing scrap, dimensional deviations, increased quotes, and extended delivery times. Below, we summarize the high-frequency pitfalls in drawings and provide general design specifications to avoid processing difficulties in advance and reduce rework losses.

First, design specifications for the safe distance between holes and the edge of the material. When drilling holes or grooves on the side of the material, the minimum safe distance from the center of the hole to the outer edge of the material should be 3mm. Less than 3mm is considered a high-stress structure, and the corners are prone to chipping during drilling and CNC processing, as well as cracking during later use due to stress. If product dimensions are limited and holes must be drilled close to the edge, the workshop can only thicken the material, process it slowly in layers, resulting in an increase in scrap rates of over 30% and a corresponding increase in processing costs. The minimum processing diameter for circular holes is 2mm; micro-holes smaller than 2mm are prone to drill bit breakage and cannot be produced stably. Square inner grooves must not have right-angle designs; they must have rounded corners with a radius of R2 or greater. Cutting at right angles produces stress concentration, and the finished product may crack along the right angle after being placed for a period of time.

Second, thickness limitations for hollow and suspended thin walls. The thickness of support bars connecting hollow patterns must be at least 3mm; thin support structures of 2mm or less are prone to breaking during processing, and they can be damaged directly from impacts during transportation. Suspended single-layer thin wall structures should have a thickness of 5mm or greater; thin plates with large areas suspended and bent thermally or printed are prone to deformation and bending, unable to maintain flatness. For multi-layer splicing display stands, if the width of a single layer exceeds 30cm, it is recommended to thicken it to 8mm to prevent it from bending or collapsing under heavy objects when placed for a long time. For thermally bent integrated products, holes or grooves must not be opened at the bending points. Holes at bending points will be directly broken due to thermal stress tension; if holes must be opened, they can only be made in sections and assembled.

Third, thickness and integral molding structure limitations. Materials thicker than 15mm cannot be thermally bent into double curved shapes in one piece due to excessive temperature differences between the inside and outside during heating, resulting in severe distortion after forming. For drawings of large double-curved pieces, it is recommended to split them into multiple pieces of material for seamless splicing. Materials thinner than 1-2mm are not recommended for deep grooving or multi-layer hollowing, as the material tends to vibrate during cutting, leading to large dimensional deviations and high defect rates. Narrow concave grooves must not be designed at the seams of transparent acrylic splices, as the glue seeping into the grooves will cause large areas to turn white, affecting transparency.

Fourth, common misconceptions in UV printing drawings: forgetting to flip layers when printing mirrored back designs, resulting in reversed text; printing non-white transparent drawings directly, causing the image to appear gray; large dark area full-page printing without reserving a white base, leading to ink buildup and insufficient curing, making the surface sticky;浮雕立体图案 exceeding the edge of the material, causing printing light oil to overflow the sides, resulting in color block residue after polishing. The drawing color mode must be CMYK; RGB electronic screen colors will significantly shift after printing. For brand LOGO precise color matching, it is recommended to include a physical color reference card for comparison.

Fifth, assembly and splicing structure design: the width of large-area seamless adhesive splicing surfaces should not be less than 8mm; narrow strip splicing has insufficient glue adhesion, prone to cracking under stress; for snap-fit structures, reserve 0.2mm of assembly tolerance on one side. Zero tolerance drawings on finished products cannot be assembled; forcing them into place may cause edge corner cracking.

Drawing cost-saving and time-saving tips: uniformly use 5mm standard thickness materials; add rounded corners to all internal grooves; place holes away from the material edges; split and splice complex double curved surfaces; convert printed drawings to CMYK mode and add white bases as needed. Shangsheng Acrylic business personnel will free of charge verify the structural feasibility of customer drawings, mark unreasonable design points, and provide optimization modification solutions, eliminating the need for customers to repeatedly adjust drawings, preventing batch rejection after finalizing the drawings for production, saving time and material costs for revision and reprocessing.
